Tom Wilkinson was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Wilkinson(Farmer) and Marjorie. He moved with his family to Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada at the age of 11, where they lived for five years before returning to the United Kingdom. Debut

In 1976, Wilkinson made his debut in the movie “The Shadow Line” directed by Andrzej Wajda. In 1980, he made his West End debut as Horatio, revival of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at the Aldwych Theatre. He acts in many movies as a supporting role namely Parker(1984), Sylvia(1985) and Wetherby(1985). In 1986, Wilkinson also worked on British television series, namely “First Among Equals”.

Through Wilkinson was an established part of industry, but he hadn’t received a role where he could leave a notable mark. In 1995, It was with Ang Lee’s period drama ” Sense and Sensibility” that he emerged as a notable actor. In 1997, he played his leading role as Gerald Cooper in the ensemble cast comedy drama ” The Full Monty”. He acted in the British romantic costume drama “Shakespeare in Love” and Rush Hour(1998) in which he played the evil British Ambassador role.

He starred movie namely “The Patriot” in 2000. In 2001, he won wider acclaim for his portrayal of a grieving father Matt Fowler, in Todd Field’s indie drama film ” In the Bedroom”. In 2002-2003 he took roles in the period films The Importance of Being Earnest and Girl with a Pearl Earrings.

He did many roles in movies namely “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind”(2004), “Batman Begins”(2005), horror movie ” The Exorcism of Emily Rose”(2005). In 2007, Wilkinson played Arthur Edens, an attorney with bipolar disorder, in Michael Clayton. In 2008, he portrayed American polymath Benjamin Franklin in the HBO mini-series ” John Adams”.
